New Years Party Idea

Posted by Peter Senesac on 9th Jan 2025

Several years ago, while at an annual weekend new years party on Fripp Island in S.c, I discovered I needed to make an oyster knife. There was always a wheelbarrow of oysters when partying with this group of long time friends.  On this weekend, there weren't enough knives to go around and that gave me the idea to make one. Sometimes I make things that are not jewelry or paintings and it does not take much to give me the idea to make something. The next day, while out on a walk, I spotted a palm frond by the side of the road. It had a beautiful patina and colors. I used my Swiss Army Knife (is there a Swiss army?) to cut off a piece. It looked like it might be a perfect handle for an oyster knife. I took it home and eventually found a worn out file that I broke in half, ground down, and inserted the tang end in the palm frond with a hammer. The only thing missing from the perfect oyster knife was a way to scoop up the hot sauce without putting down the knife. That’s why I made a small sterling scoop spoon for the other end. I didn’t want to detract from the patina for the finish so I scrubbed it with a green kitchen scrub pad and waxed it with Johnson’s paste wax.  It's my version of folk art
